Protesters Falls

In 1979 a large group of protesters, organised by residents from Terania Creek, blocked the bulldozers sent to destroy what was to become Nightcap National Park (in the Northern Rivers NSW). They saved some of Australia’s most valuable and beautiful bushland, and so began environmental activism in Australia. The march from Terania Creek up to Protesters Falls became legendary.

The area is rich in the flora and fauna of the semi-tropical rainforest, home to Albert’s Lyrebirds, Paradise Riflebirds, Logrunners, Regent Bowerbirds and many other bird species.

Having previously only heard the male Paradise Riflebird’s rasping call and seen Riflebird’s in trees far in the distance, it was a thrill to see this female up close.

Close up of a female Satin Bowerbird, another spectacular rainforest bird.

Off course the male Satin Bowerbird is even more spectacular with his blue coat to match his purple eye.

The widespread Lewin’s Honeyeater is also a key citizen of the rainforest.

A Pied Butcherbird takes command in grassland adjoining the bush.

Ripe berries of this Bangalow Palm are a big attraction for these two Crimson Rosellas.
