Broadwater Beach is just north of Evans Head in the Northern Rivers Region of New South Wales. It is on a large and long sandspit formed many thousands of years ago by northerly sea currents. The sand deposited diverted the Richmond River from its old mouth northwards to its present outlet to the sea at Ballina.
Large sand dunes behind the beach protect the sandspit from the ravages of the ocean. Behind them, at Broadwater Beach, are remnants a Banksia scrub that also once protected the coastline.
These oversize sand dunes protect the sandspit from erosion by the sea.
Many Rainbow Bee-eaters here. The breed in burrows dug into the sandhills.
The male Red-backed Fairy-wren usually gets all the attention but the female is also a very pretty bird.
Chestnut-breasted Mannikins feeding on the ripe grass seeds.
White-cheeked Honeyeaters are everywhere, feeding in the Banksias.
